When you feel hunger pangs, wait for 20 minutes before you eat. Your hunger pangs may just go away after that, because it is often a false signal sent out by your hypothalamus (a tiny sensor in your brain) to let you know that you are 'hungry'. If you are not actually hungry, the hypothalamus will send out another message to tell you that you're full in about 20 minutes, whether you've eaten or not.

Clinical Studies On The Effectiveness of Hypnosis In Weight Loss
In one study where 109 people (aged 17-67 years) were separated into two groups: one group underwent a weight loss program with hypnosis; the other group underwent the same program, but without hypnosis. At the end of the 9-week program, both groups had a significant weight reduction. However, at the 8-month and 2-year follow-ups, the group with hypnosis showed significant additional weight loss, while the other group without hypnosis exhibited little further weight loss. In addition, most people from the group with hypnosis achieved and maintained their personal weight goals (Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985, Vol 41(1), pp.35-41).(4)
In a meta-analysis of 18 independent studies, the results indicated that hypnosis substantially enhanced the treatment outcome – average people receiving hypnosis gained better results than at least 70% of the average people who did not receive hypnosis. The effect was more profound at the long-term follow-up as those who received hypnosis continued to lose weight after the treatment ended (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. 1995, Vol 63(2), pp. 214-220).(5)
Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine, based on their study of 45 people, also reported that those who received the weight loss treatment plus hypnosis lost significantly more weight at a 3-month follow-up than those who received only the treatment, but not hypnosis. (International Journal of Eating Disorders,1989, Vol 8(3), pp. 335-341).(6)

When you hear the word 'hypnosis', perhaps the first thought that conjures up in your mind is a stage hypnotist demonstrating his or her power over the (paid) audience and instructing them to perform hilarious acts on the stage. But...
That Is NOT What Hypnosis Is About!
That is a common misunderstanding attributed to the stage shows of hypnosis that you've seen, perhaps on the TV shows or live.
A researcher from the University of NSW, Dr. Amanda Barnier said, “Hypnotised people do not act like robots, nor are they powerless pawns of post-hypnotic suggestions planted in their subconscious” (in a report published in The Sydney Morning Herald, Feb 2, 1998).
People will NOT do or say anything under hypnosis that is against their will – including 'performing' on the stage, if they don't want to.
According to the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists (ASCH), hypnotic state (i.e. the state under hypnosis) is a normal, natural, healthy state of mind. It is a very deep state of relaxation.
Hypnosis was developed by a scientist named Dr. Franz Mesmer for medical use in the 1700s. It has since evolved and been used extensively in the medical field. When practiced by a legitimate hypnotist, hypnosis is a very powerful tool for treatment of a broad spectrum of medical conditions. The medical and clinical use of hypnosis has been approved by the British Medical Association (1955), the American Medical Association (1958), and the American Psychological Association (1960).

In a study of 60 women (aged 20-65 years) who were at least 20% overweight, the group using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds at the 6 month follow up, while the group that did not use hypnosis only lost 0.5 pounds. In another study of 43 outpatients of the Morton Prince Centre for Hypnotherapy in New York City, 30 of them who completed the treatment with hypnosis showed an average weight loss of 20.2 pounds. (International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 1985, Vol 33,pp. 150-159).(2)
After reviewing the research literature for hypnosis in obesity, Dr. Johan Vanderlinden from the University Psychiatric Center-K.U.Leuven, Belgium, confirmed, “Research data clearly shows that the addition of hypnosis substantially enhances treatment outcome, especially for the long term.” (International Handbook of Clinical Hypnosis, pp. 221–232).(3)
The Science Behind Hypnosis
Why is hypnosis so effective and powerful? What is the 'force' behind hypnosis? Can anybody be hypnotised?
Yes, anybody CAN be hypnotised. As I've said earlier, hypnotic state is a natural and healthy state of mind. In fact, we ALL go into hypnotic state (or trance state) frequently. Remember a time when you have been driving home, the radio is playing and a song comes on that reminds you of an experience, a great holiday, someone you care about, and you find your mind just drifts off? These are common experiences of natural, light forms of hypnosis that we drift into all the time.
During hypnosis, most people simply feel relaxed. The brain wave activity slows down from the waking state (beta brain wave state) to the trance state, which is similar to that before going to sleep (alpha brain wave state). In the trance state, it is very dreamy and pleasant, and during this time, the mind is very open to visualisations and creating a rich sensory experience, allowing the subconscious to be re-programmed to change unwanted habits and create new compelling habits. This is WHY hypnosis has such a long-term effect on the people who are exposed to it.

Now listen up: since we drift into hypnotic state by ourselves all the time, it is NOT necessary to engage a second person, such as a hypnotist, to get you hypnotised – YOU can hypnotise yourself, which is often referred to as 'self-hypnosis'. Professor Kathy Sykes (born 1966) is a British physicist and academic, who has held the post of Collier Chair For Public Engagement in Science and Engineering at the University of Bristol since 2001. Kathy is also a member of the Welcome Trust's Public Engagement Strategy Committee.
She makes frequent appearances on British television and radio, including being one of the scientists on the Open University/BBC Two challenge show Rough Science and a team captain on BBC Four's puzzle panel game, Mind Games. Her other TV credits include co-hosting Ever Wondered... About Food (2001) and writing and presenting Alternative Medicine: The Evidence (2006). Her last project was to investigate the field of Alternative Therapies. This program was shown in March 2008.
She was the recipient of the 2006 Royal Society Kohn Award for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science.

'Alternative Therapy' in the BBC Two television program was a film about a personal journey which Kathy Sykes, a professor of Sciences and Society at the University of Bristol, set out to investigate the authenticity of hypnosis.

Q: What is hypnosis?
A: According to the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists (ASCH), hypnotic state (i.e. the state under hypnosis) is a normal, natural, healthy state of mind. It is a very deep state of relaxation. It is a state of relaxed “focused concentration” in which you are neither fully awake nor fully asleep.
Research on scans taken during hypnosis demonstrated that there is a specific state that the brain accesses whereby the mind is receptive to suggestions.
Q: What does it feel like under hypnosis?
A: During hypnosis, most people simply feel relaxed. The brain wave activity slows down from the waking state (beta brain wave state) to the hypnotic state (or often referred to as “trance state”), which is similar to that before going to sleep (alpha brain wave state).
In the hypnotic state, it is very dreamy and pleasant, and during this time, the mind is very open to visualisations and creating a rich sensory experience, allowing the subconscious to be re-programmed to change unwanted habits and create new compelling habits. This is WHY hypnosis has such a long-term effect on the people who are exposed to it.
Q: Can anyone be hypnotized?
A: Yes! In fact, your body and mind go into “trance” frequently. Remember a time when you have been driving home, the radio is playing and a song comes on that reminds you of an experience, a great holiday, someone you care about, and you find your mind just drifts off. These are common experiences of natural, light forms of hypnosis that we drift into all the time.
Q: Is hypnosis safe?
A: Yes! Hypnosis gets you into trance state which is a normal, naturally occurring, healthy state of mind. It has been around for more than a century to treat a broad spectrum of medical conditions and there has never been a single documented case of harm resulting from the use of hypnosis.
Hypnosis has now been developed into a science and there is a section devoted to medical hypnosis at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. Q: Am I unconscious during hypnosis?
A: The answer is twofold. During hypnosis, you feel calm and relaxed. Your conscious mind takes a rest, but you remain fully aware of what's happening around you. And you can come out of hypnosis anytime you want to.
Q: Would I be asked to do something against my will?
A: Absolutely NOT! You will not do anything under hypnosis that is against your will. That is a common misunderstanding associated with hypnosis, that people will be controlled against their will. The misunderstanding, and hence fear probably come from the stage shows of hypnosis that you saw on the TV shows or in live where the (paid) audience were instructed to perform hilarious act in front of the other audience (you).
You can rest assured that people will NOT do or say anything under hypnosis that is against their will – including 'performing' on the stage, if they don't want to. As Dr. Amanda Barnier, researcher from the University of NSW, said, “Hypnotised people do not act like robots, nor are they powerless pawns of post-hypnotic suggestions planted in their subconscious” (report published in The Sydney Morning Herald, Feb 2, 1998).
Q: What is self-hypnosis?
A: All hypnosis is essentially self-hypnosis. The hypnotist simply facilitates the process to help you get into the trance state. You can also get into the state by yourself using so-called self-hypnosis. However, the level of state, that is to say how deep you're in the state and the effect will vary if you have an experienced and skilful hypnotist to help you compared to if you try to hypnotise yourself.
